Side Salad: Slop Balls and Goodwipes Eau de Cologne
July 9, 2026
Good morning from Dieline’s editor-in-chief, Bill McCool. Here’s your daily side serving of design news, short musings, brand stuff, and forgotten ephemera.
Say! We just launched a monthly typography column from our very own Charlotte Beach. In her first piece, she takes a look at Mamdani’s campaign, that new bespoke Wendy’s font, and a walking tour of signage in Valencia.
I am once again asking you not to use AI to create your flyer. They will absolutely not attend your poetry slam, block party, briss, or Flowbee pop-up.
Not gonna’ lie, the Fancy Food Show had a handful of decent new brands on display, and we’ve got not one but TWO roundups. We’ve got the usual design-food porn from Fred Hart and a larger trend piece from Beardwood&Co.’s Ryan Lynch (incidentally, it is genuinely funny to me that you can sum up the trade show by saying, EH, FUCK IT, JUST CONDENSE IT INTO A SLOP-BALL AND SELL IT).
I dunno, maybe this is not the time to use beer metaphors, dude.
LEGO could have at least made The Addams Family pinball machine.
Illustrator Maggie Cowles is making World Cup drawings—and you can buy them, too!
Goodwipes wants you to have a “Scentsational Summer“ and has made a billboard that spits out a Goodwipes scent every 30 seconds, which is weird but definitely a good weird.
Heinz is giving out “penalty packets” of ketchup, which would be funny if that whole Trump-FIFA-Balogun thing hadn’t happened and absolutely cursed the US team. That I am even commenting on this is completely absurd, and I would like to get off this ride now, please and thank you.
By the by, if anyone has a cool project, the lines are open, and you can always reach me here: bill@dielinemedia.com
Toodles.
-Bill
