Good morning from Dieline’s editor-in-chief, Bill McCool. Here’s your daily side serving of design news, short musings, brand stuff, and forgotten ephemera.
Chloe spoke with artist and illustrator Jackson Tupper about his design for Camp Butter. He also dropped a little wisdom that speaks to the “quirky” sheen we’ve been seeing in CPG since, oh, 2020ish: “Probably now more than ever, we’re living through an ‘I choose wine by the label’ mentality, but for all packaged goods. From tinned fish to olive oil, buying cool art to express your taste seems almost more important to the consumer than the actual product behind the packaging. If it looks good in your kitchen, it’s gotta be good. All to say, with such an emphasis on standing out on the shelves, we’re competing against a lot of heavy-hitting packaging design these days. It’s a fun time.”
Incidentally, that Camp Butter label exists in the same world as beef tallow brand SuetCo. Clarified butter and beef tallow are definitely getting the cutesy illustrated Americana treatment. Interesting to see them side by side on the site within a day of each other.
Ballooning bubble! You’re on notice!
Hard agree on this Criterion Collection packaging problem for the new Stanley Kubrick set. If a box set retails for over $500, you probably shouldn’t be using those pesky sleeves.
Dude. Streaming is out of control:
I know Jell-O has a Kleenex-level brand name that speaks for the entire category, so it’s always weird for me to say “gelatin brand.” That said, Wobble is so perfectly executed for a GELATIN brand, and you can absolutely feel it jiggle as soon as the name comes out of your mouth.
Oddly enough, it reminded me of a lyric from one of my favorite Eleanor Friedberger tunes, “Inn of the Seventh Ray,” which was named after a restaurant in Topanga Canyon. I always thought the line was “watch us go wiggling in Wobbleton,” but it’s actually “Wombleton.” Oh well, I have old ears.
Paul Noth illustrated exactly how I feel about those cute-washed agentic Meta furballs over at The New Yorker. But now I want a Terminator movie starring these guys.
Outerwear brand Columbia made a fleece jacket using the carpet pattern from the PDX airport.
Supposedly, PTO requests are up for when Grand Theft Auto VI comes out. Everyone else is gonna have “GTA flu” the week of November 19th. Don’t tell HR.
I swear I’d drive all night again just to buy you some shoes.
-Bill
