Good morning from Dieline’s editor-in-chief, Bill McCool. Here’s your daily side serving of design news, short musings, brand stuff, and forgotten ephemera.
I filed most of the newsletter before the midterm results rolled in, but voters overwhelmingly rejected AI infrastructure and the development of more data centers. And, at least as of this morning, 33 ballot measures passed. That’s hardly the story of the night, but it’s certainly part of it.
And on that note, keep on pushin’.
The great COVID-era QSR redesign has finally ended? It’s fair to say that the scourge of online ordering and get-in-and-get-out-ASAP-and-don’t-make-eye-contact-with-a-human-soul resulted in a less-than-human experience. Some folks want to loiter and hang out, and with this overall lack of third spaces, who can necessarily blame them? Ruthless efficiency is out; lingering is in?
Speaking of fast-ish food, love the identity SAMPLE pulled off for Port Neches burger joint Luckies.
MLB and Mother Design assembled a dream team of type designers to bring the league’s font book to life. Real dang shame we probably won’t have baseball next year. My fantasy league weeps.
Cinnamon Roll Mac n’ Cheese? Kraft is just fucking with us now, right?
That Adobe class action suit is back on. No one likes a hidden subscription cancellation fee!
Oh yeah, “AI Compute Campuses“ sounds a lot less evil. That’ll do the trick!
Just learned of the existence of Spelunkr, and boy howdy, I can’t wait to play around with it. Assembled from VHS recordings available on the Internet Archive, Spelunkr is a free “TV guide” with 33 channels showing everything from classic monster flicks and professional wrestling to Saturday morning cartoons and noir flicks. There are even classic commercials. No skipping ahead; you tune in and watch. It is EXACTLY like the 80s and 90s, and the channel gives you what is on at that exact moment. It’s glorious.
Talked with Kingdom & Sparrow about our October Pack of the Month and how they went full pastoral on Wild Lady Eggs.
Hey, super friend! Are you working an extra 90 minutes a day? Welp, there’s a reason for that!
If your school rejects the use of AI, Google is totally cool with it, OK? Really. They’re totally fine. But you can no longer use their search engine.
Think we need to sit down with AMC and have the talk (about these Dune 3 popcorn buckets).
And this old world is a new world.
Bill
